Start with the provider

Ask the agency or individual to answer clearly before discussing a start date.

Legal name, address and phone number are provided in writing.The agreement explains fees, notice, replacement, leave and cancellation terms.Recent family references can be contacted with their permission.There is a named contact and written process for complaints or safeguarding concerns.

Confirm the person

Review original documents in person or through a secure, agreed process. Keep copies only with consent and appropriate privacy.

The caregiver’s identity and current address are verified.Employment history and two relevant references have been checked.Any background or police check is dated, explained and provided in writing.Any health or vaccination information requested is handled lawfully and respectfully.Language, communication style and cultural preferences are a practical match for the household.

Define the care safely

Write down what the caregiver will do, what they will not do, and who makes clinical decisions.

Daily duties, personal care, mobility help and household tasks are listed.Clinical duties are matched to treating-clinician instructions and confirmed qualifications, registration and scope.Medication support, records and escalation steps are written and understood.Emergency contacts, red flags and when to call emergency services are agreed.Consent, privacy, keys, visitors, phone use and photos are covered in writing.

Plan the working arrangement

A good interview ends with practical details that prevent misunderstandings later.

Hours, overnight expectations, breaks and days off are written down.Pay, overtime, travel costs and payment dates are clear.Absence, sickness and replacement arrangements are explained in writing.A handover notebook or agreed update method is ready for the family.
